Why I Love My Job: Reason #1 — Working With Kids 💚

I thought Monday would be a good time to start something I’ve wanted to do for a while — to list the reasons why I love what I currently do (which is working with kids as a private Russian language and elementary math tutor).

I have so much to say on this topic that it definitely feels like it’s going to turn into a series 😄. So today — reason number one: working with kids.

I love working with kids for so many reasons, but if I had to sum it up, I’d say this: kids are their own universe. Sometimes it feels like they’re an entirely different species — and that shows you just how much life, social interaction, etiquette, and many, many other layers change us as we grow.

Kids are us before we learned to behave, to keep our mouths shut (not always a good thing for a teacher lol), to fit in. Before we learned that we need to be a certain size, gender, color, level of education (insert your own thing here) in order to enjoy life. And that’s exactly why kids are so precious — and so fascinating — to observe.

If I had to name just three things I love most about children and working with them, they would be these:

1. Their natural ability to enjoy the simplest things in life — like there is no tomorrow. Honestly, if I ever met a genie, maintaining this ability throughout life might be my one and only wish. When you work with kids, you get touched by it. It’s almost contagious — they pass just a little bit of it on to you.

2. Their creativity AND incredible ability to learn, inquire, remember, and absorb information. Sometimes it feels like they’re superheroes… or very elaborate machines 😄. If only we could maintain this level of brain activity and learning ability throughout our lives — oh my! Especially when you compare it to your own brain at a certain age, lol.

3. The sillies. I put that silly face on the lady on purpose 😜. Kids love fun, jokes, and silliness — and when you get to work with them, being part of all that chaos is a bonus. In many other jobs, some of the things I do during my classes would probably earn me a psychiatric assessment. But with kids? It’s okay. You can run. You can play.  You can be completely ridiculous. You can even draw beards on baby pictures in your learning materials 😄 (love that one).

Yes, there are limits, and there’s a time for everything. But in our grey, often boring everyday life, this is literally a breath of fresh air.

So… what was I saying? I love working with kids because they are awesome. And let me be very clear — as someone who has her own children and works with children, I will never say that it’s easy. Kids are not easy. They are not perfect. And they are not always pure joy every single minute 😄.

But all the things I mentioned — and many, many more, like watching them learn, change, and grow — make it more than worth it. And more often than not, incredibly enjoyable 💚.

Below you’ll find some of our fun, silly, and joyful moments from our classes and home learning with my daughters — little snapshots that say more than words ever could.

Until the next reason to love my job 😊
