Both with my own children and in PlayCademy lessons, I love finding ways to turn learning into play and math is no exception! I recently uploaded a new video on YouTube where I share one of our favorite activities for exploring place value and bigger numbers in a hands-on, engaging way.

It’s called Fish for Place Value - a fun math activity that uses base ten blocks, magnetic fish, and fishing rods to help children see and feel what numbers really mean.

In this activity, kids get to “catch”🎣 a number and that build the number using base ten blocks, or match the number to a set of prepared blocks. This simple game turns an abstract concept into something visual and exciting. Children practice counting, grouping, and recognizing place value - all while having fun!

In the video, I show how to set it up, explain the variations, and share clips from our home lessons (my daughter is the enthusiastic little learner you’ll see in action 💕).

If you’re looking for a way to make math time more joyful and interactive — whether at home or in the classroom — I think you’ll love this idea!
